Avery Dennison is seeking a Sr. Leader, Sustainability to join the Materials Group North America organization. This role is responsible for the Materials Group NA Sustainability strategy and program. This position will report into the Sr. Marketing Director, Strategic Innovation & Sustainability, with a dotted line to the Global Sustainability Director.

Key responsibilities:

Work cross-functionally to coordinate, align and proactively implement environmental sustainability initiatives encompassing the full value chain of LGM NA products and services. Collaborate with key external customers/partners on the company’s sustainability initiatives to support strategic direction. Is knowledgeable and passionate about sustainability issues, and has an infectious drive and passion to encourage and educate others. A leader, natural communicator and skilled project manager with demonstrated experience and has a steadfast capacity to work across functions and organizational bounds to advance Avery Dennison’s performance and reputation in sustainability.

  1. Sustainability Leadership for Materials Group NA
  • Lead in the development, alignment cross-functionally and execution of the NA sustainability strategy and priorities for the business
  • Represent the company at industry associations, conferences and other appropriate venues (TLMI, CELAB, Vinyl Sustainability Council, AWA)
  • Serve as liaison to sustainability organizations, e.g., Association of Plastic Recyclers, US Plastic Pact

2. Company Sustainability Goals

  • Develop the strategy and drive execution and governance of the NA GHG Scope 3 reduction program in collaboration with the Global Sustainability team in order to achieve the company’s 2030 GHG reduction goal. This includes collaborating cross functionally supporting the procurement organization to engage suppliers in the decarbonization journey for upstream reductions, engaging R&D/Marketing/Sales for development and growth of sustainable portfolio and execution within Operations to meet Scope 1 & 2 goals.
  • Lead Scope 3 efforts in Materials Group NA, including project and process management and for data collection, validation, calculation and aggregation to serve business purposes.
  • Drive development of goals, metrics and targets. Build measurement systems & scorecards to help lead and supervise projects and initiatives to enable business to reach & exceed targets.
  • Communicate program status to partners and ensure advancement of results; collaboration with internal & external communications team to drive awareness.
  • Promote GHG reduction standard processes within the company and across the value chain, supervise and evaluate regulatory compliance and industry trends pertaining to GHG and sustainability.
  • Ensure completion and launch of the sustainability reports and website information.

3. Lead in Customer & End-User Sustainability Inquiries

  • Provide direction to Materials Group NA sales & marketing teams in addressing marketplace inquiries related to product sustainability; e.g., carbon footprint, brand scorecards, etc
  • Work with internal partners to ensure appropriate responses to customer inquiries; Global EHS, Corporate Product Compliance, RBIS, etc.

Qualifications

  • BS degree required, master’s degree preferred
  • 10+ years business experience, with a commercial emphasis; sustainability experience strongly preferred
  • Proven track record to develop long term strategy, align partners and implement
  • Outstanding communications and influencing skills (written, oral and presentation)
  • Ability to translate sophisticated technical information for non-technical audiences
  • Knowledge of portfolio management theory and practice
  • Strong cross-organizational leadership skills and experience leading sophisticated projects
  • Solid understanding of the external landscape and associated dynamics that influence emerging market requirements.
  • Strong systems thinking and results oriented
  • Domestic and/or international travel 15%
